Overview

The Suez Canal is a 193.30-kilometre-long artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, and is a key trade route between Europe and Asia. Constructed by the Compagnie de Suez, led by French diplomat [[ferdinand-de-lesseps|Ferdinand de Lesseps]], the canal officially opened on 17 November 1869. It offers vessels a direct route between the North Atlantic and northern Indian oceans, reducing journey distances and times.
